Wataru Hirai was born in Japan in 2000. After graduating from Osaka College of Music, he studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, in the saxophone class.
He won the grand prize at the Osaka International Competition (2019), and 4th prize at the 8th Adolphe Sax International Competition in Dinant (2023).
